Things to see and do in and around Kippford, Dumfries & Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway’s Colvend Coast is perfect for a holiday break.

It’s a great place to relax and take in the stunning coastal views, enjoy the area’s unspoilt sandy beaches and the many walking trails offering both coastal and forest walks.

For adrenalin lovers, the world-famous 7Stanes Mountain Bike trails at nearby Dalbeattie Forest draw visitors from all over the world whilst, for those seeking more relaxed pursuits, the nearby RSPB Reserve at Mersehead is a must-see attraction with its trails and hides. In spring, Mersehead’s meadows fill with lapwings and skylarks, butterflies and wild flowers. You may also see a roe deer or two. In the autumn, thousands of barnacle and pink-footed geese start to arrive for the winter, creating a not-to-be-missed spectacle.

There is a pottery just outside Kippford and two miles away lies Dalbeattie with a range of shops and other facilities including a museum. Keeping to the area’s maritime connections, William McMaster Murdock, the First Officer on the doomed Titanic, was born here and a memorial to him can be seen at the Town Hall.

For families, the coast offers a number of beautiful sandy beaches and nearby forest walks.

The Children’s Chocolate Factory with its adventure playground is less than 45 minutes' drive from Kippford, as is Dino Park which features life-sized pre-historic models, a mine and a dinosaur fossil dig.

Dumfries, which is 30 minutes' drive from Kippford, has a number of visitor attractions including Burns House, Mabie Farm Park, an Aviation Museum based at a wartime RAF airfield and the Camera Obscura.

If you are a keen golfer, there’s a 9-hole course at Dalbeattie and 30 local courses and links including another 9-holer at Kippford and Preston Farm at Southerness and 18-hole courses at Colvend, Southerness and Castle Douglas.

There are also signposted walks in Dalbeattie Forest, fishing and boating around Loch Ken (40 minutes' drive from Kippford) and the Red Kite Trail in nearby Laurieston.

The National Trust for Scotland also has gardens at Threave (20 minutes' drive from Kippford).
